How we helped Socious create an impact gigs marketplace.
Meet Socious
The impact sector suffers a strong talent shortage that’s preventing many social organizations from creating much needed change. Paradoxically, research shows that younger generations increasingly express a desire to use their skills for good, but only a fraction of them are doing so. Socious set on a mission to change that by creating an impact job marketplace that makes use of AI and blockchain to entice more young people to contribute their skills for good.
What we did
We started working with Socious’ founder in the very early days of the company to ideate, test, and design functionalities that would allow the product to deliver on the ambitious vision to make impact work attractive and accessible to young professionals.
Our engagement with Socious extended and through several months of collaboration, we’ve supported the venture in a variety of ways, from crafting its pitch strategy, to designing new functionalities for the app, revamping its marketing website, and helping to build internal design capabilities.

"They know how to manage the design process, including the intangibles that help us streamline our design. Thanks to nowthen’s help, we were able to narrow down on our strategy. I highly recommend them to all early-stage founders working on social and environmental causes."

Hands-on approach from the get-go.
Like many early-stage startups, Socious started out with a strong but blurry vision, a lot of uncertainty around what the product should actually do to deliver on it, and strong time and resource constraints.
Our approach was to go hands-on from the get-go, framing, and testing hypotheses with rapid prototypes; this way, we would not only explore the attitudes behind the idea of social contribution but also directly evaluate potential solutions.
We went through several rounds of ideation, prototyping, and testing, to explore possible set of functions. We finally landed on the foundation of what Socious is today: an impact-gigs marketplace.

A clearer value proposition and product narrative.
Contrary to pre-conceived beliefs, it’s not the access to contribution opportunities that is stopping people from volunteering their time and skills—gigs for various causes are just a quick google search away.
Rather, the main obstacle seemed to be the low attractiveness of these opportunities. To young professionals, most of the social and environmental related gigs didn’t seem professionally fulfilling, nor financially rewarding, and most importantly, didn’t leave them with the impression that they were in fact having an impact.
This insight became the foundation of Socious’ value proposition: to make social good contributions truly worthwhile for young talents. Once the value proposition was clarified, it became more obvious for Socious where to apply its effort, what to cut out from the product, and how to talk about it externally to make it as attractive and competitive as possible.

Visualizing impact.
A core dimension of Socious’ value proposition centers on the visualization of impact – a concept that was especially important to the young professionals we interviewed. Most of them had tried to contribute to the impact sector, but often wondered if their work was truly having an impact, and quickly got discouraged.
After prototyping several possible ways to visualize impact, relying on an existing and known framework like the UN’s SDGs proved to be most relevant, flexible, and motivating.
Each contribution opportunity in Socious is tagged with one of the Goals. Upon completion of their gig, users are rewarded with impact points that both grant them perks in the app, and accumulate in the corresponding SDG category.
